The cost of passivation of implants

April 2, 2009

Please excuse my limited knowledge of manufacturing. I am an MD/MBA student working on a project related to orthopedic manufacturing.

Can anyone tell me how I might be able to quantify the cost of the nitric acid passivation step in the manufacture of hip implants?

Many thanks for your assistance!

Hi, Catherine. The best way would probably be to email a couple of passivators who actually do implants and ask them if they would give you a budgetary quote for your project. They may tell you that electropolishing rather than nitric acid passivation is the usual treatment.
