Pitting within hard chrome on aluminium

February 15, 2009

My local plating house has been plating aluminum pistons for me for several years.
Recently they started seeing lots of pitting which is a no no in application.

He has checked out his chemical tank several times and we have have confirmed a stabilised solution.

What else could be the cause of the pitting that he is seeing.

Contaminants in the tank?

Pre - prep of the parts?

The process of manufacturing the parts has not changed and we have confirmed that the aluminium is sound.

Any help appreciated

It depends on what the pits look like and what size they are.
It could be from pits in the metal, machining burs, gas pits from inadequate agitation (or amperage).
