-----How to protect a nickel plated shower drain from tarnishing?
January 23, 2009
My plumber installed an unfinished nickel coated brass shower drain in my new shower floor. The mfg. is Sioux Chief, model
#821-2sn. The strainer is much thicker than standard strainers, however, it tarnishes rapidly because it is exposed to shower water daily. The manufacturer claims it never has heard of this drain strainer tarnishing.
I have tried Brasso

, which retards the tarnish, but doesn't prevent it. I have been told that lacquer exposed to hot water will soon erode.
The drain can't be replaced because it would damage the drain pipe and surrounding tile. I would greatly appreciate knowing how to prevent tarnish on this drain cover.

Stephen,
There are high temperature lacquers on the market. Check with your local professional paint store. Many of them can be brushed on.
