Solvent Bonding ABS to ABS

December 28, 2008

Hello,
I am trying to find the best chemical, structurally, aesthetically and environmentally friendly to bond injection molded ABS with a second ABS piece.

I have been told to use Weld-On 2354, Methylene Chloride or M.E.K..

The pieces are essentially a pipe to a pipe approx. 2"ø and I plan to do 200+ bonds per day. The solvent needs to be clear, as strong as possible and as environmentally safe as possible.

What would be the best fit between the two pieces? I currently machining a few "practice" pieces and plan to start with a .002" (.05mm) clearance all around and increasing to .007"(.18mm)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thank You,

Pics are available of my project.
