What is a correct method of measuring micron plating on 925 silver

Hello, I want to know about the measuring method of micron gold plating on 925 silver.
And how much gold should put on a flat square of 4cm X 4 cm with thick ness of 3mm and 1mm. How should we calculate for an individual piece -- is there any formula?
