Removing firecoat after silver soldering

I have been making charms and lapel pins using sterling silver and jeweler's bronze for some time now and struggle with firecoat removal after silver soldering jump hoops and pins/posts to them. I also hard enamel many of these charms at 1400 degrees adding to the firecoat problem. It was suggested I try nitric acid to speed the process however I was hoping to find a safer alternative to this perhaps something organic to remove the firecoat and reduce polishing time. Thank you.
