Want to change exterior brass hardware to pewter color

We have a 17 yr. old Baldwin Brass Mortise Entrance Lock on our 10 foot front door. The exterior looks horrible the interior perfect. I want to know how I can improve or change the color of the hardware appearance without removing it. If I 00 steel wool [on eBay or Amazon] it, what products would I need to use to change to a pewter finish? It is hot and humid where we live. It needs to last a few years. Replacing the entrance hardware would cost $600 or more.

Absolutely do not use steel wool! Use scotchbrite. It comes in different grits, so use several from roughest to finest. There are some good paints out now that will work for several years and can be repainted. You may want a clear lacquer or even a wax finish. You could have the outside portion electroplated, but you will be without that portion for days.
