Low cost replacement material for stainless steel

My name is Matthew Salviano,

I am the production manager for an Astronomical Company. Our company is seeking a material to replace the costly 303 and 304 Stainless steel. We currently use the material for drive wheels and shafts on the telascopes. Is their any steels on the market that are less costly, rust resistant and durable.I am also interested in a plating that has the same qualities.

In some applications plain carbon steel plated with Electroless Nickel has proved to be a suitable substitute for stainless steel. It should to be noted that every application has to be thoroughly investigated and tested before the specs are changed.
