Do buffing compounds have a shelf life?

I went to buff out some aluminum the other day and I was using some brown tripoli rouge (polishing/buffing compound) [affil links] and white rouge [affil links] I have had for quite some time. Maybe I just don't remember how difficult it is but I'm getting alot of cloudiness and you can see all the places where the buff rode. I've been raking the wheels. Should I buy fresh compounds? It seems to be real difficult to get an even finish with no marks.

Tripoli and white rouge [affil links] stick compounds consist of abrasive and greases. They have a long shelf life, probably 10+ years. I have some that age which still work just fine.

Sounds more that it's the wheel you need to change.
