Plastic wrap poisoning in microwaves

June 4, 2008

Hi, My name is Joe and I am working abroad for a huge company in rural areas. I need to know if by wrapping food with Plastic wrapping will poison food at all inside a microwave?

is this possible and what is the best advised way of doing this then?

Kind regards

Hi, Joe. The site operators and regular readers have specialized knowledge of metal finishing, but no qualifications in plastic wrap and microwaves. Still there are many brands and types of plastic wrapping designed for this purpose and I personally trust them to not be harmful.

Do a google search on the subject. There are hundreds if not thousands of articles.
Yes, there is a low level problem of the phthalates getting into the food. It is a problem for a few people and little or no KNOWN problem for most people.
A recent news item was the plastic baby bottles that were warmed in the microwave giving off a significant dose to babies because of their tiny size and frequent use.
If it is of concern to you, use pyrex containers to warm your food, rather than the original package.
