Using chemistry

February 22, 2008

Before half term, year 9 had been doing an experiment with iron nails. Some were accidentally left behind in a beaker on a balance over half term. The teacher noticed the mass of the nails before half term was 5.04g. After half term she looked again and the mass was 5.16g. The nails also looked different. Before half term they had been shiny, but after half term they were dull and a slightly reddy brown colour. The teacher also noticed that there was a bit of condensation in the beaker.

what happens?

Is this an actual situation that the teacher and the class are trying to resolve, Helen? Or have you simply dropped off your homework for someone else to do, and you'll be back later to pick it up and sign your own name to it when it's done?  🙂

It's Simple,
The Iron Nails rusted. Whenever Iron Rusts, there is a weight increase which depends upon the amount of iron rusted.

Generally 1 Kg of Iron rusts to form 1.43 kg Rust.
