-----Low quality, porous, chrome plated steel lugs on bikes?
2007
Dear Sir:
Is it true that chrome plated steel lugs on some bike frames are more porous, and more prone to rust and deterioration?
Thank you,
cyclist - Brooklyn, New York
Hello. George. I'm not sure that "porous" is exactly the right word for describing the problem, but it's close. It's true that the quality of chrome plating can range from abysmal to outstanding. Our FAQ on Chrome Plating will explain some of the issues, but you are probably left to purchase bikes and parts which offer demonstrated corrosion resistance.
I have a Huffy, which is an inexpensive bike, and the chrome plating was horrendous, unbelievably low quality, accelerating the rusting to breakneck speed.

But top quality OEM auto, truck, and motorcycle parts can last decades under horrible environmental conditions.
