Can rods that are chrome plated now be induction hardened?

adv.

hi
I am a mechanical engineer and I am working as a process engineer in a shock absorber manufacturer factory.
We have received finished shock absorbers without hardening but they are finished and chrome plated.
I have a question about plating of shock absorber shafts. Is it possible to harden a piston rod by induction hardening after chrome plating process?

First of two simultaneous responses --

It is possible if the substrate has enough carbon to harden. The magnetism that induces the current and heath will penetrate through the chrome. Unfortunately, the chrome will be subject to an extreme stress which may lead to it spalling depending on its thickness and adhesion. It will also soften and discolor due to its exposure to the treatment and will not recoup its full hardness back.

Second of two simultaneous responses --

The chrome will be so soft that it will be worthless.
