Cheaper approach than Pd for metallizing plastic?

plastic surface is prepared prior to nickel plating with Pd compounds.Is there any cheaper alternative for Pd, available for surface preparation to boost up final finish?

There are many cheaper approaches, including silver paints, copper-bearing colloidal dispersions, etc. But for maximum brightness and tenacious adhesion for premier applications like exterior automotive, I'm not aware of an alternative.
