Gold Rings turned Gray after years of wear

Hi! My name is Sara and I'm only 19 years old. Today I had a doctors appointment since I wasn't feeling well and had a fever. While I was getting ready, I looked at my left hand and I was completely petrified. The two 10K gold rings that I have been wearing for years that used to belong to my mother looked to be a completely silver color. But on my right hand I had one 10k gold ring and it was still completely gold. The doctor told me it could br hormones but I'm still confused about the cause of my gold rings now being a silver color.

Any possibility of a broken thermometer in a garage or basement drawer you reached into? Exposure to mercury vapors spells the end of gold jewelry.
