Painting over an old anodized aluminum mast

Hi my name is Kevin. I have purchased an older sailboat with anodized aluminum spars that need attention. The anodizing (black) has completely worn off in places and is almost see through in others (more than 50% of the mast). I asked at a local yard how much to paint and got an answer that shocked me. I would like to do this myself from a bosun's chair if possible. Can anyone give me some advice on how to proceed?
