Coating Polished Brass

I want to strip off the old coating and polish some brass items. Paint remover [on eBay or Amazon] has taken off the old coating and I've polished the brass to a rich luster with a buffing wheel and jeweler's rouge (polishing/buffing compound) [affil links]. Now what do I use to recoat it so it will be hard and long lasting? I've tried spray can lacquer, but it didn't work well. Baldwin hardware has a new line of polished brass with a coating they guarantee forever. Thank you for your help.

There are excellent lacquers for brass available from such firms as G.J. Nikolas [a finishing.com supporting advertiser].

However, so called "lifetime" finishes are only available through PVD applications of titanium nitride or zirconium nitride, or electrophoretic systems offered by firms like Techniclad, LLC. These approaches require factory installation of processing equipment that is way beyond the reach of hobbyists and home owners.

Take a look at Everbrite Protective Coating. It is an easy to apply, one part, self leveling clear coating that can be wiped or sprayed on. It will protect surfaces from corrosion and oxidation from sun, salt air, acid rain, moisture and other damaging elements for many years and can be maintained indefinitely. If you have old faded surfaces, they can be refinished to look new and be protected as well. You can purchase directly from Everbrite, Inc.s' website. Enough to coat 35 sq. ft is $12.95 plus postage [Ed. note: pricing was posted in year 2000; may be somewhat higher currently].
