303 and rust on solder ferrules

adv.   stellar solutions banner

(2000)

Our company is using 303 stainless solder ferrules and we are having a problem with rust. Could this be due to bad passivation, cleaning prior to, or bad steel. Also is this just surface rust that merely needs to be wiped off. Any info would help. Frank

I am not sure what a solder ferrule is since 303SS cannot be soldered as is.

Some fluxes will cause 303 to rust. 303 is about the bottom of the heap as far as rusting goes. 400 series is worse, but not much. If you do not want rust, use 316SS.

All of the possibilities you listed are possible and or probable. Picking one as most probable without more information may not be possible.

The problem is most likely lack of proper passivation.
