Soft Iron Anode info

Any information gratefully accepted on the use of soft iron sacrificial anodes.
I'm wondering how critical it is for almost pure iron to be used, and whether any old ferrous alloy would also be OK. I appreciate specific electromagnetic properties may be important for some applications, but in the real world...?
