Wire for wind chimes?

I would love to get into the area of making wind chimes and the such for outside and am wondering where one would find wire of any kind that would be up to or around 1/2 inch thick? I don't know much about this and have been surfing the net on how to - which lead me here. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,

Half-inch diameter is mighty thick, Trinda. You could probably safely hang a Winnebago from it as your clapper. Round material that big is usually called "rod" rather than wire. But steel wire is available from a hardware store. You might want aluminum wire.
