Plating choice/procedures

I'm totally unfamiliar with 'plating' terminology. I have a car that has had parts of it 'gold' plated(at least it appears to be what was done), specifically, the door handles, the key bar on the trunk, car model id strip on the back of the trunk lid and an emblem on the hood. I would like to know if these can be 'silver' plated, (possibly the term chromed is more appropriate). I also wonder if this process is possibly done with the pieces still on the car or if they HAVE to removed for dipping purposes. I'd also like to get a ballpark estimate for doing 4 door handle assemblies, a small 2' x 2' emblem, a key lock strip about 18' x 1' and a 2' x 8' model id strip...thanks.
