I've been restoring an old VW beetle for a few years now and hopefully this year if not next year it will be ready for an Auto show.
Being as meticulous as I am I always try to find the best method or way to get the job done right.
I've gathered all non replacable hardware (special nuts bolts clips, etc..) and cosmetic brackets, plates and so on. The parts were glass bead blasted and are ready to be plated (Zinc,Yellow Chromated, TYPE III). In addition, the parts will probably be dipped in lacquer for additional protection.
The concern I have is whether the lacquer over the chromate will whiten or even peel off over the years.
Maybe no top coat is required ?...just simply add a thin film of rust preventive oil. or Black zinc or cadmium plated

Hello , in regard to your post on zinc with yellow type III , you might want to consider cad with yellow chromate [cadmium] it looks the same , but is nearly indestructible , common for aircraft and military. It will cost a bit more , and definitely be a bit tougher to locate a supplier , but the overall may be worth the results.Ron Landrette

I totally agree with you that Cadmium (base)is superior to zinc. I believe will outlast the ZINC/Yellow combination. However, cadmium has been banned in my area from what I was told.
But I really don't think so.
How many microns would you recommend as a base before applying the yellow chromate.
