Purpose of nickel plated finishing

I would like to know what is the purpose of applying nickel plated to the metal parts. Is it able to prevent the metal part from get rusty in wet environment? Which type of plating is able to prevent the metal get rusty in wet condition?

Hello Innkean. Nickel plating is both corrosion resistant and highly decorative. It might well be very appropriate for components on coffee makers.
