Comparison between Iridite coating and Alodine 5200 coating

Q. Could you please explain the differences between Iridite Coating and Alodine 5200 coating on Aluminum.

Eric Foo

A. Hi Eric. Iridite is a Macdermid trademark for a series of chromate conversion coating processes for aluminum and other metals. Alodine is a Henkel trademark, and Alodine 5200 is one specific chromate conversion coating process for aluminum. Both are well known coatings for aluminum per Mil-C-5541 -- just as Coke and Pepsi are two well known brands of cola drinks. There are probably specific Iridite coatings that are generally similar to Alodine 5200 in performance and application method. If you patiently apply the search engine, you can probably find as much additional info on the topic as you wish -- or contact MacDermid for their closest substitute for Alodine 5200.

Q. Is SGS 650E an equivalent of Alodine 5200?

Susan Huang

A. Hi, Susan.

I don't think that is really an answerable question because "Alodine" is a proprietary name. If someone orders a Toyota Camry, you can't give them an 'equivalent' Hyundai. I believe you should try to have the spec rewritten in more generic fashion, such as Mil-DTL-5541, class ?, type ?, etc. Good luck.
