Flash pickling and smut removal on Ti6Al4V

2006

Final machining of a tube component produced in the above alloy results in a cold worked surface. We would like to flash pickle to remove this layer in preparation for subsequent plasma nitriding, however initial trials appear to have problems with residual smut on the surface of the parts.

How can we remove this smut reliably to ensure the quality of nitride layer?

Thanks

Ed. note: What did you try in those initial tests, Ian? (so the readers don't work to suggest what you've already tried). Thanks.
