-----Remove goldplate from s.s. flatware
We have been given an older 12 place setting of gold plated stainless steel flatware. The gold has totally come off portions of the knives & forks & is stained/worn on many of the other pieces. Is there a way to totally remove the remaining gold that isn't toxic for a homeowner? The set is quite nice & all the pieces are there.

One reason gold is prized is because it is so inert. There is no chemical a homeowner can apply that will dissolve gold. You could take these to a plating shop for stripping, but it might be more cost effective to get them replated.
