Q. Hi Everybody,

I would like to know what are the techniques of making long lasting Dyed gold plating which give life of 2 years on Imitation Jewellery, I heard China is using the same nowadays. Is it an open formula or technique available or someone has developed on his own. Pls,

A. GOLD DYE AND GOLD PLATING ARE DIFFERENT. GOLD DYING (COLOURING) WITH EPL COVER COATING COULD STAND FOR 2 Yrs UNDER NORMAL ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS.

A. Hi. Electrocoating/electropainting is a technology similar to painting, but in a way it is rather like electroplating because DC electricity applied to the parts while they are within the painting vat coverts the waterborne paint ions to permanent paint on the parts. Two advantages over competing technologies include the fact that it's very thin (often about 0.0002" thick), and that the coating is electrically insulating such that once there is a coating in one area, the electricity is directed to a different area, resulting in quite even paint thickness. Clear electrocoatings can be used and then dyed before baking/curing.

We have linked to several books on the topic to read more. Note that it involves rather substantial capital cost and real estate, so it's a technology suited to jewelry manufacturers but not jewelry shops or customer jewelers.
