Second De Embrittlement required after plating?

2006

If a bolt has been de-embrittled for 8 hours, and is then electro zinc plated does the bolt need to be re de-embrittled? if so for how long! many thank,

Charlie Nictone-Bantor

2006

Yes, if the tensile strength is 1200* MPa, it shall be baked at 190* C for 3* hours within 4 hours of plating (and prior to chromating or other supplemental treatment) -- ASTM B633 [affil link] .
*or greater.

Note that hydrogen embrittlement relief baking is preventative; 'de-embrittlement' suggests that damage can be undone. Or, is that UK terminology?

Yes, it is English terminology commonly used in place of embrittlement relief.
