Problems with food-safe electrophoretic lacquers

Q. Dear sir,

As a usual customer of electrophoretic lacquer, we use approx. 3000 kilogram of it -- and I am having some problems; they are pitting, water marks, black sports, roughness, and rainbow effect. We usually use lacquer of Atotech of UK and Grauer Weil. We usually use lacquer in food-safe items of silver, brass, copper items and are unable to solve this problem. Please help me. Yours faithfully.

A. Hello. You should use a post electro lacquer dip for removal of tearing, pitting and other problems.

A. Hi Sachin. The usual case is that you buy proprietary processes with secret ingredients from suppliers specializing in them. In return for you & we not knowing what those ingredients are, and consequently being rather unable to troubleshoot the process based on generically available science, it becomes the obligation of the proprietary supplier to offer any and all of the necessary knowledge for you to be able to successfully run the process.

Firstly, you should have on-hand a technical data sheet for the process which clearly explains every parameter. Are you in possession of that, and have you carefully studied it and verified that correct limits and operating conditions have been implemented at every step? If you haven't, then you must. If you have, then the supplier should be in your plant as we speak investigating why the process is generating defective parts after you did exactly what they told you to do. Good luck.
