De-embrittlement for Chromium or Nickel Plated Parts

(1999)

If we were to specify Chromium or Nickel plating for stressed components, do we still need to call for de-embrittlement treatment in the same way we would for Zinc plated components? And should the process be the same one, or does it need different times / temperatures?

Many thanks in anticipation.

Hi Wayne.

Parts with 35 HRC and higher shall be baked after plating 392 F for at least two hours.

Dear Mr Wayne,

Our experience with tensile tests on stressed components, namely seat belt inserts, shows that 2 hours at 220 * C is not enough .

However when we de- embrittle for 4 -6 hours after achieving 200 + * then we are able to achieve 6 Sigma assurance on our supplies. Can anyone tell me if 0.5 microns of Chrome plating on top of 25 microns of duplex Nickel can embrittle the Steel substrate ?

Regards and thanks in advance,
