Testing ductility of nickel deposits




I would like to know if anyone has any information on procedures for testing the ductility of bright nickel deposits on steel. Thank you.

The best way to measure ductility is by the "Chrysler ductility method" also there is a method ASTM B489. The Chrysler method is to plate a foil 0.001". The thickness of the foil is critical. Having too thick of a deposit you will obtain a low ductility and having too thin of a deposit you will obtain better results.

After making a foil of cut into strip the width of a micrometer jaw and fold over the foil to make a "U" shape in the jaw of the micrometer. Turning down the micrometer until the foil breaks and ductility is equal to the following: Ductility = t/2R t= thickness R= Where the foil breaks the. radius For example is the nickel thickness is 0.001" and the foil breaks at 0.005 diameter the ductility would be: D = 0.001/2*0.0025 = .2 The best nickel can be is 0.5 for obvious reasons.
