Different colors of 24kt gold plating - any meaning

2005

HI,

I sell plated pen kits and one of my customers told me that the 24kt gold plating of my products are not as 'gold' or bright as another vendor's product. I didn't think that the color variation of the gold color means anything with regard to quality - does it? Is there any way for a non-plating expert like myself to judge the quality of plated gold products?

Color is a standard for colour of gold. It has a formula and a machine for checking color. For details go to the gold council.com website.

Different colours in gold shades are obtained by introducing different metals in small quantities in the gold baths. The colours are usually identified as Swiss Standard colours as carat colours.
1 If Copper added to the bath we get 14 carat pink to 22K pink
2.When Silver added we get Greenish Yellow Colour
3.When Cobalt added, we get reddish yellow colour
4.When Nickel added, we get pale yellow.
5.Finally pure gold is 24K yellow.

Hi, Ernesto.

"Gold Plating Technology" by Frank H. Reid and William Goldie may not offer every answer you need, but is a very good start. Good luck.
