Brazing softens Nickel -- Will Electroless Nickel Plating Help?

Q. Sir,

I have observed that post brazing of nickel, it becomes soft (annealing), my query is "Does Electroless nickel plating help in increasing the strength of the soft metal" or are there any post brazing procedures that can be followed that will increase the strength of the parent nickel material?

A. It will not be possible to increase strength of the brazed part by ENP. Why don't you elaborate your problem.

Q. Kind Attn: K.Venkateswaran

Sir, I have to decide on a brazing cycle for nickel to get a hardness of 45-50 HRC. Post brazing I observe nickel to be very soft and in annealed condition. My problem is --

1) I want the above said hardness.
2) I have to carry out the brazing procedure and I don't have any other alternative.
3) Currently my brazing temperatures are around 1070 °C
4) Any heat treatment process for nickel to increase hardness post brazing?
5) ENP capabilities in increasing hardness (If possible), else some information on procedure of ENP and characteristics of ENP.

I would be grateful if you can help me in answering these queries.

A. Dear Mr Nagakiran,
Brazing automatically reduces the strength of Nickel,
So you can try Brazing coupled with heat treatment, Brazing with high tech filler material so as brazing temperature comes down (like NFTDC- Hyderabad does) or friction welding can be done.

Q. Mr. Govindaraju,

Thank you for the reply. Currently I am using NICHROME brazing alloy which is commonly used in nickel brazing. Can you kindly provide me some information about NFTDC- Hyderabad work if you are aware.

Thanking you,

Yours sincerely,

A. Nickel can be brazed at lower temperature than you indicated. Please advise your usage temperature.
