Copper corrosion on pot

I was cleaning my copper pot lid with vinegar and kosher salt and left it on for 20 minutes. Now the lid has large pea size spots which do not come off. I have tried Copper polish and am getting tarnish off but the outside of copper still has outlines of the spots. Any answers?

A photo would help. But it sounds to me like the problem might actually have been overheating, rather than the vinegar ⇦ in bulk on eBay or Amazon [affil link] and salt.
