What can be done to repair a copper fireplace hood whose finish was damaged by muratic acid?

My friend has a copper hood over her fireplace. Her brother used muratic acid to clean the bricks over this hood, resulting in dicoloration of the copper and damage to the finish. What can we do to restore this copper hood? My friend is sick about how it looks. Thanks.
