How can I restore my old porcelain bathtub?

(1999)

After 80 years my old tub is showing wear and a few rust spots. How can I restore this beauty? There are numerous companies with multiple techniques but how does a layman sift through the propaganda? Can porcelain be reapplied? Hmm so many questions, I'm bewildered! Thanks, Les

There are antique restoration professionals that restore porcelain tubs. Saw it on one of the home programs like this old house or similar. Poor mans repair is a professional that will apply two part polyurethane designed for that purpose. It was about $100 when I checked, but I had worked with the guy at a time in the past.

Real porcelain enameling requires a superclean surface, far beyond what you could achieve in situ, and a baking cycle that you can't achieve either (see http://www.porcelainenamel.com/consumer.htm), so what you are looking for would an acceptable imitation not the real thing.
