-----Aluminum frame outside-does it hold up?
Would the typical aluminum channel used in interior picture framing hold up outside? We have a possible application and would like to know what effect, if any, the elements would have on it. I know that aluminum does not rust, but what about corrosion or pitting, at say, the shore. Is there a coating to protect against this? Would silver be the best choice, because that is the color of the base metal? Thanks for any help.

Bare non-anodized aluminum is unlikely to hold up, Mr. Reisman. However, decorative picture framing probably has a light anodized finish. For exterior use you would probably want the anodizing to be heavier. Many large buildings are anodized aluminum.
In a salt-air environment, though, powder coated aluminum might be even better, although it would not have a metallic look.

Hi Ron , I agree with Mr Mooney , the best coating is anodising and then powder coating , there are a variety of colors available and some interesting finishes including clear ,although I am not sure of the suitability of clear coat for outside exposure , I suggest that you call one of the major powder suppliers and discuss your needs . regards John .
