-----Restoring old bike parts
Any advice on restoring plated bicycle components? I have an old SCHWIN that still works pretty well, but looks pretty old and threadbare. Some of the components and alum, and I can clean them up nicely. But the nickel plated shifters have stumped me. The bike is so old I can't find the parts for it any more. Just wondering. Thanks

There is no problem having these parts polished and replated; it's only a matter of cost. See, original equipment parts are processed in bulk with hundreds of their brothers, so the cost of labor is not that horrible. But when you bring in one set of parts that are going to take a few hours to review, strip, polish, plate, buff, and replate, it's not going to be a $10 job.
You might contact shops who specialize in restoration work.
