Equipment for measuring thickness of gold plating

1999

Which is the best easy to use equipment for measuring the gold thickness on brass components (from 0.1µ to 5µ).

Can it measure also palladium, nickel, etc.?

Is it accurate? Is it easy to use? (no need to calibrate too often?)

No health risk? (X-rays?)

Thanks.

Look at x-ray fluorescence. The x-rays are relatively low voltage, and well-shielded, in standard units. The testing time is very short -- seconds. You may need the more expensive units to measure gold coatings. The cheaper units can easily pick up nickel and palladium.
