Making designs by Etching Stainless





Looking to make designs on stainless steel sheets by chemically etching or burning. Has anyone attempted this or know what products we can try... Thank You.

There are a number of materials around that will work. Stay away from chlorides, especially HCl unless you want corrosion problems. You can use HF pastes, of course, if you can deal with the hazards.

Search online for etchants.

Nitric acid plus hydrochloric acid will etch SS at a fast and somewhat predictable rate. Fumes and waste has to be dealt with according to local regulations. Both acids are hazardous, especially nitric.
