Black build up on stainless steel from belting

We have a problem when plastic or urethane belting rubs on stainless. Over time it leaves black build up on stainless steel. The urethane and plastic are clean. What could this problem be?

It sounds like you could be getting a lot of heat buildup on the surface of the steel that is causing a carbon buildup either from the steel or from the plastic. There are other possibilities, of course, depending on the type of plastic, the temperatures, other materials coming in contact with the steel, etc. Even though the plastic looks clean it may be depositing organic material on the steel surface when it rubs against it.
