Wood look on new steel door is awful

I have a pre hung steel door that I wanted to finish. It was slightly beige color to begin. I used a primer before I started. I painted the outside a latex white that came out great. I wanted the inside of the door to have a wood look. It was recommended that I use a gel stain made for steel doors. It looks awful! Some of the door looks okay other parts looks streaked and globby, even though I followed all the directions. What can I do now? Please let me know.
