Thickness measurement for copper-nickel-chrome plating on plastics?

Q. We are a job-plater in Jakarta (Indonesia) specialized in copper-nickel-chrome plating on ABS plastics.

We are looking for thickness meter that can measure the thicknesses of copper, multi layered nickel, and chrome plating on the plastics substrate. Please anyone who knows the right device kindly help us.

Thank you, Irwan.

A. Dear Sir:

I believe that you could use a Kocour Electronic Thickness Tester for your application. The plated coating itself will serve as the electrical contact. You will de-plate chromium, nickel, copper, and when you hit plastic the machine will shut itself off, registering the thickness. This machine is dependable and has been on the market for decades, although updated constantly.

Please be advised that this is a destructive test, and that the part will have a tiny circle down to the plastic when the test is over. Contact can be made to Kocour Company in Chicago, Illinois. USA

Good luck!

Plating quality measurement on chrome plated ABS parts

TUTORIAL:
(to help readers better understand the Q&A's)

ABS is an acronym for 'Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene'. It is the most commonly plated plastic because it has good engineering properties to make items from plus, because of the mixture of plastics, it can be etched to a sponge-like surface for excellent adhesion of the plated layer.

Q. Hi,

I am looking for testing chrome plated ABS parts like shower heads, etc., mostly sanitary and bath fittings. All I can think of are the tests like salt spray tests, climate tests (tests at high temp and low temp), plating thickness, etc.
Can anybody suggest me is there any other characteristic that I need to look at?
Thanks in advance for your answers.

A. Hi,

I also recommend to do some adhesion tests with the "cross-cut" procedure. Hope I wrote it correct.

A. For layer by layer testing Use XRF type coating thickness tester, or you can use electrolytic (coulometric> as a cheap solution.
