-----Impregnation of casein pens for waterproofing
We are pen manufacturers in UK. Using casein (a natural material made from milk which has properties very similar to wood) we are making ranges of pens. We need to waterproof the pens to stop humidity causing expansion in the material. Have tried oil and it seems to work but much too greasy for everyday production. Any ideas

I'm sorry that I cannot help you with your problem. However, I was wondering if a Conway Stewart casein fountain pen I have is being affected by the problem you describe. The pen is marked IVORY 015/091. There is no problem with the body of the pen, only the screw on cover. The cover has become criss-crossed with curly black thread like lines. An uneven surface is also visible when held under a light at an angle. Needless to say the appearance of the pen has been greatly affected and I have been greatly disappointed. I was hopeful that you might be able to tell me how I may go about trying to get the cover replaced. I would be willing to send you the defective cover upon receipt of a replacement if it would help you with your research.
Sincerely,
