Is cadmium plating prohibited; how to identify it?

Q. I NEED TO KNOW WHETHER CADMIUM PLATING IS PROHIBITED.

SECONDLY I NEED TO KNOW WHAT WILL BE THE COLOUR OF THE COATING AND HOW WE CAN FIND OUT WHTHER IT IS CADMIUM COATED OR NOT. WE USE THIS COATING FOR FASTENERS.

A. Cd is prohibited in some countries and some not so this question depends on where the product is going. Color can be silvery grey or yellow if chromate conversion treated.

A spot test is: place one drop of conc. nitric acid on surface, after 1 min. one drop 10M sodium hydroxide to neutralize. Add one drop ammonium sulfide solution, deep orange precipitate indicates Cd.

How to separate cadmium and tin anodes

Q. I have old anodes of tin and cadmium. How to differentiate between them practically?

A. Hi Fahad. Cadmium is 18-19% heavier than tin. You should be able to do a quick first check by weighing them. If they clearly sort into two piles, you can then verify with the spot test previously mentioned. Good luck.
