Surface coating aluminum extrusion
Q. I am looking for a coating that I can apply to Aluminum to prevent scratching/gouging due to a mechanical interface with a concentrated contact point of a steel ejector.
Coating needs to be thin ( <.02") and easily applicable in standard manufacturing processes.
Please advise if possible.

A. Electrolytic Plasma Process (EPP) would resolve the problem. After EPP treatment, a hard coating (>HV1500) will form on Al. A very few researchers and companies in the world including one from Materials Engineering in a Windsor university are dealing with EPP surface modification on Al alloys.

A. Hi Marc. Hardcoat anodizing is probably the most common process for hardness and wear resistance, and is done on all sorts of high production parts. Usual thickness is 0.002".
There is a whole society for just this one discipline, the International Hard Anodizing Association.
