Oil painting, artist grade, on aluminum

Can you put artist grade oil paint directly on an aluminum surface? Would any clear acrylic medium coating be suitable for painting on metal?

I have heard that oil paints bond naturally to aluminum. It supposedly creates a chemical adhesion thats actually very strong. I don't know anything about how to prepare it, though I would imagine an acrylic layer would keep that strong bond from occurring.....
