Q. A FEW YEARS AGO WE BOUGHT A SOLUTION TO USE ON PLATED STEEL THAT WENT THROUGH A RANGE OF COLORS THAT WENT FROM A BLUE COLOR THRU PURPLE AND BURGANDY DEPENDING ON THE TEMP OF THE WATER AND SOLUTION AND ALSO THE TANK AGGITATION.I THINK IT WAS CALLED BLACK MAGIC AND WAS PURCHED FROM RIO GRANDE.WE ARE LOOKING FOR ANY METHOD TO PLACE COLOR ON STAITLESS STEEL OR PLATED STAINLESS STEEL RING MESH.

A. You can use next solution(electrolitic colouring):
1 lit sulphuric acid
7,5 gm sodium bichromate
For 18 cr/8 Ni SS,object= anode,cathode=lead,70-95 C, 1,3 V , o,o6 A/dm2,5-5o min(colour sequnce=brown,blue,yellow,redish brown,purple,green)

A. I think they make blueing solutions for stainless. You can also try baking lacquers. They come in different colors that can be baked in the oven at like 350-400degrees for a fairly permenant coating. and of course there is always heat coloring if your not worried about the temper.
