Do pennies' weight change over time

2004

Do pennies weigh more over time or do they stay the same weight? How does their weight change if it does?

Patricia M.

2004

My favorite answer--It Depends. If you store a penny in an inert atmosphere or vacuum, very few people have the equipment to measure any weight change. If you carry a penny around long enough, some of it will wear off. All you have to do is look at a hundred assorted pennies and you wee visual differences. The only way that it can gain weight is to form corrosion products that are not easily displaced or to accumulate "dirt". You do not see a lot of this in most normal cases.
