Electro Plating A193 Studs

2004

Can ASTM A193 [affil link] studs and bar stock be electro plated for corrosion resistance without strength reduction?

John J Stock
Structural engineer - Houston, Texas

2004

High strength steel can be electroplated without strength reduction, but it needs a baking process afterwards to relieve hydrogen embrittlement. Alternately, it can be mechanically plated, or protected with a zinc-rich dip-spin coating. It seems, though, that ASTM A193 [affil link] describes a wide range of classes, the metallurgy being different for each class. It is possible, I suppose, that one or more classes might be impractical to electroplate. But if you give us the class you have in mind, hopefully someone will have experience in that particular composition.
